Kirby Misperton Recycling Centre
This initiative started with just recycling crisp packets, stored in a box outside a private house and then expanded to include confectionary wrappers, beauty products, dental products and pet food pouches. The centre was then moved to the Village Hall carpark with the very kind permission of the village hall committee with gives ample space to increase the range of items.
The recycling company Terracycle scheme forms the backbone of this scheme, which has become a global leader in recycling typically hard-to-recycle waste. where collection points exist for a wide range of products.
Another project assisted by REG is the Morsbags scheme, where unwanted cotton fabrics are converted into carrier bags for free distribution, reducing the use of single-use plastic bags. The centre also includes collection box for Morsbags which is significantly expanding its local presence having now made over 3000 bags distributed within Ryedale.
The most unusual item for recycling however must be mascara wands which are very handy for removing parasites such as ticks from animals ! Donated wands are then passed on to the local wildlife charity Pickering Hedgehog Rescue to tend rescued hedgehogs prior to their re-release into the wild.
Pickering also partake in some Terracycle programmes. Xandor Automotive is a registered TerraCycle collection point for dental products and hand wash soap pumps from Carex, Imperial Leather and Baleys of Bond Street.
