Plastic Free Pickering

Plastic pollution is soaring. Plastic never disappears, it breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces which pollute the air, soil and water finding its way into our food chain and bodies and damaging eco systems.

Plastic waste affects us all – its damaging our health and wildlife and contributes to the climate crisis. It ends littering our town, hedgerows and countryside.

Pickering has pledged to reduce the amount of single use plastic we use by becoming a Plastic Free Community

What is a Plastic Free Community (PFC)?

As a Plastic Free Community we are committed to reducing the amount of plastic that is polluting our seas and oceans and environment.

We’re not trying to eliminate every single piece of plastic – some of it is useful and essential. We’re trying to remove avoidable single use plastic like throwaway coffee cups, bottles, carrier bags and food and other packaging. If we all make a few changes to use less we can have a massive collective impact.

To be a PFC we need to work with at least 5 local businesses to support them to use less plastic for example in the workplace or in the products they sell. Businesses will also achieve their own accreditation so they can promote what they are doing to help the environment.

In addition we need to encourage more people to use less single use plastic in their daily lives by working with schools and local community groups as well as talking to people at events. We have lots of suggestions about easy changes we can all make which will often save us money too!

There are already more that 160 Plastic Free Communities accredited by Surfers Against Sewerage across the country and we are excited that Pickering will soon be joining them.

We have set up a Plastic Free Pickering Steering Group and Pickering Town Council formally support the initiative.
