Moorsbus Project

Run by members of the Kirkbymoorside group

View the Moorsbus Factfile here

Moorsbus.org is registered public transport, run by volunteers, to enable people without cars to enjoy the lovely North York Moors National Park and surrounding area. Everyone is welcome. We also encourage car users to use public transport, because sharing transport reduces pollution, congestion and carbon footprint. Friends of Moorsbus is a passenger group with over 300 members, and we support Moorsbus Community Interest Company, who are three volunteer directors. Our Friends group helps with fundraising and supports new passengers with “days out” suggestions, particularly people who are lonely or isolated, or who are nervous about using public transport into the countryside. The Moorsbus CIC volunteers arrange contracts with local bus operators so that the buses can run every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday from the beginning of May to the end of September.  We have been arranging these services since 2014, when we started with one bus, and we now run several, see route map on https://moorsbus.org

Moorsbus

We are unusual, please support us!

We spend lots of time fundraising and we always need help with this. Funding will help us to run Moorsbus routes starting from Malton, Northallerton, Thirsk, Darlington, Stockton and Redcar.  The buses are full sized, modern, wheelchair accessible, accept bus passes for the elderly and disabled, and have low fares with contactless payment for others. Under 16s travel free. In towns and villages, we use bus stops, but buses will stop to pick up or put down passengers in the countryside where it is safe to stop. We have friendly, helpful drivers, and lots of regular passengers who couldn’t travel if we didn’t exist. Moorsbus covers between 25% and 70% of costs from fares and bus passes, and the rest we raise from all sorts of sources, such as Parish Councils, tombolas, supermarket plastic bag levy votes, small grants, & selling donated books,  We keep fares low so that everyone can afford to travel, but long rural routes never cover their costs because there are much fewer passengers boarding per mile than in urban areas, though fuel and driver costs are the same.  We connect with commercial bus and train services, but our routes are not commercially viable on fares, so would not run if we did not arrange them.
