Paths for Everyone Projects

In 2018, Sustrans.org presented a new vision for the UK’s National Cycle Network in their Paths for Everyone review.

Sustrans are working with partners, volunteers, supporters and local communities to make this vision of a traffic-free, more consistent and accessible Network for everyone a reality.

They want to create a Network where families can enjoy bike rides away from motor traffic; where those who are less mobile can go at their own pace; where walkers can fill their lungs with fresh air. They are involving local communities in shaping and caring for their local paths. and responding to feedback from people who use the National Cycle Network.

In Ryedale,  Sustrans did the initial design work for the Malton – Pickering Cycle Route, a path for everyone that will be installed in Spring/summer 2021.

Ryedale Cycle Forum have been working toward some new Paths for Everyone, between Kirkbymoorside – Helmsley and  Hovingham – Malton.

Paths for everyone are also really important for opportunities for supporting wildlife.  They bring people into contact with nature, and provide opportunities for planting, conservation, ecology surveys, photography and art.  They can include all sorts of habitats for insects, birds, amphibians, stream-life and mammals.

Paths for everyone are also really important for our mental and physical health, whether you choose to enjoy them alone or in company.  Depending on where you live,  they can be used for leisure, or as routes to work or to school or the shops, or to visit friends, family, or to take part in local events, or to visit places of interest.

With only 9 years to go until the 2030 tipping point for international climate change targets,  enabling more people to cycle safely is vitally important for reducing the carbon footprint of travel.  More Paths for Everyone will help to reduce traffic congestion, air pollution and parking problems in our local towns, and support the tourist economy in Ryedale.

REG is supporting the creation of Path for Everyone routes to link up the market towns in the Ryedale area, and the villages on the way.

You can read about the Kirkbymoorside – Helmsley route here

You can read about the Malton – Helmsley route here

REG is working towards these Path for Everyone routes with Ryedale Cycle Forum, Ryedale Bridleways Group, local environment groups, Parish and Town Councils and North Yorkshire Council. We could use some more help. Please follow the links above for more details.

Below you will see some photos by Roger Hillman of path clearance on Helmsley Railbed, since 2020. Potentially, this railbed path could be part of both of the above routes. Brash is moved to another part of the railbed, to make new wildlife habitats. The railbed is currently a permissive bridleway starting at Riccal Drive, Helmsley, and 1.2km can be enjoyed. However after 1.2km it is not yet a through route, apart from on horse-back.  To help with Helmsley Railbed, please email helmsleyrailbedpath@outlook.com
